چکیده

Measurements are presented for the density of ground-state neutral xenon atoms in the near field of a 200W co-axial Hall thruster. The diagnostic strategy employed is a variation of a classical absorption technique, using retro-reflected intrinsic line emission from the resonance 147 nm vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) transition in atomic xenon as a source for absorption. In this way the technique has, in principal, the sensitivity of narrow-band absorption methods. Preliminary values for the near field number density (10 – 10m) are within range of those expected. The limitation in sensitivity and accuracy is due largely to a weak reflected emission beam, resulting primarily from losses in the optical components. Future experiments will make use of fully reflective optics, which provides easier alignment in the visible, and improved optical throughput in the 147 nm region studied.

Optical Boron Nitride Insulator Erosion Characterization of a 200 W Xenon Hall Thruster

Vacuum ultraviolet emission (137.9 nm) of boron neutrals sputtered from a 200 W xenon Hall thruster boron nitride insulator is evaluated as a diagnostic for real time evaluation of thruster insulator erosion. Three Hall thruster plasma control variables are examined; ion energy (discharge potential), ion flux (propellant flow), and plasma conductivity (magnetic field strength). The boron emissi...

Ion Velocity Measurements in a Linear Hall Thruster

This work presents the general operation and the near exit plane velocity field of the Stanford Linear Hall thruster in a high vacuum environment. The ionized propellant velocities were measured using laser induced fluorescence of the excited state xenon ionic transition at 834.7 nm. Ion velocities were interrogated from the channel exit plane to a distance 30 mm from it. Both axial and transve...

Laser-Induced Fluorescence of Singly-Charged Xenon in a 6-kW Hall Thruster Plume

We present laser-induced fluorescence velocimetry measurements of the 5d[4]7/2 → 6p[3]5/2 transition for singly-charged xenon (Xe II) at 834.953 nm (vacuum) in the near-field plume of a 6-kW Hall thruster. Axial velocity profiles were obtained at six locations axially along the channel centerline and nine locations radially across the thruster channel at the exit plane. Discharge voltage was ma...

Computation of Neutral Gas Flow From a Hall Thruster Into a Vacuum Chamber

The finite pressure present in vacuum chamber testing of space propulsion systems such as Hall thrusters can have a number of undesirable effects. For example, the thrust generated by the thruster is higher and the plume divergence angle larger in ground tests in comparison to space operation. To try to quantify these effects, the direct simulation Monte Carlo method is applied to model a cold ...

Ion Velocity and Plasma Potential Measurements of a Cylindrical Cusped Field Thruster

Measurements of the most probable time-averaged axial ion velocities and plasma potential within the acceleration channel and in the plume of a straightchanneled cylindrical cusped field thruster operating on xenon are presented. Ion velocities for the thruster are derived from laser-induced fluorescence measurements of the 5d[4]7/2 −6p[3]5/2 xenon ion excited state transition centered at λ = 8...
